The United Nations has designated every 31st of October as World Cities Day. The Day is
expected to greatly promote the international community's interest in global urbanization, push
forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of
urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.

UN-Habitat and UN agencies in Nairobi will celebrate World Cities Day on 31 October 2015 through an Inter-Agency Soccer Tournament. The event will take place at the United Nations Recreation Centre in Nairobi. The event format includes the main tournament, and a series of street football skits running concurrently. This event is organised in partnership with Urban Bites.

Saudi Arabia

UN-Habitat in cooperation with Umran Society held a World Cities Day on workshop 31 October 2015. The overall objective of the event was to celebrate World Cities Day, and launch a nation-wide competition for Urban Planning and Architecture students, as well as shed light on urban issues, such as public spaces and street connectivity. The workshop took place in the city of Riyadh, at King AbdulAziz Historical Palace.


The Global Observance of World Cities Day 2015 will take place in Milan, Italy on 31 October. The event will be hosted by UN-Habitat, the City of Milan and the Shanghai Municipal Government. Organized within the framework of the 2015 World Expo, which runs from 1 May to 31 October 2015, World Cities Day will mark the end of the 2015 World Expo and will also be the last of the three UN Days selected by the UN to celebrate at the Expo. The event will take place at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, Italy and will have key note speakers in the field of urban development, in the Urban Talk, a round table discussion featuring the theme, Designed to live together.


UN-Habitat in Spain celebrates the World Cities Day in Madrid

30th of October, Madrid, Spain; UN-Habitat kicks off the World Cities Day one day early this year in order to share information on the process towards Habitat III and the new Urban Agenda, as well as the last-minute details on the European Urban Agenda.

In the light of the III UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development in Quito, Habitat III, just being one year away, the UN-Habitat Office in Spain, together with the Ministry of Development and the Spanish Federation for Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) came together in a forum to inform about and discuss the HIII Conference and how this opens up the possibility to move forward with and improve the New Urban Agenda for the European Union.

Represented among the speakers was Mrs. Rosa Suriņach from the Habitat III Secretariat, informing about the Conference; Mr. Pedro Campos Ponce, European Advisor of Urban Politics from the Dutch Government, speaking on behalf of the New Urban Agenda of the European Union and Mr. Alfonso Vergara, President of the Metrópoli Foundation, introducing the idea of a possible New Urban Agenda for Spain.

More than a hundred participants from national and local governments, academia, urban institutions and organizations attended the meeting.
